Bankruptcy court filing fees must be paid to the court before a bankruptcy case can be filed. The most common types of bankruptcy filed in the United States Bankruptcy for the Eastern District of Virginia which serves the Hampton Roads are including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News and other areas in our region are chapter 7 and chapter 13. The court filing fees for new bankruptcy cases are as follows:
- New Chapter 7
- New Chapter 13
Individual debtor(s) may file an Application to Pay Filing Fee in Installments in the Eastern District of Virginia. Payments are due on the same day of the month as the date on which the original petition is filed. Cash is not accepted at the Newport News Clerk’s Office.
In addition to bankruptcy court filing fees, in chapter 7 bankruptcy cases, a debtor may have to pay additional court costs to file a homestead deed in the state court to protect property.
